My research is on the analysis and optimization of machine/structural elements. It comprises: 1) theory for modelling and optimization of periodic microstructures for micro- and macro-responses (stiffness, stress and buckling resistance, vibration and acoustic); 2) getting MDOF transmissibility of dynamic forces from transmissibility of displacements; 3) development of topology optimization for steady state vibration above the fundamental frequency. I have over 20 years of teaching experience and research practice.

My research interests are structural health monitoring with emphasis on damage identification, non-destructive testing using vibration analysis, and experimental techniques based on speckle interferometry, such as shearography. I’ve been applying wavelet transforms to measurements of rotations with the objective of describing damage in laminates. I’m also interested in nanomaterials and their characterization by numerical methods, involving, among others, couple stress and non-local elasticity theories.

My research is focused on the dynamics of railway vehicles and their interaction with the infrastructure (track and catenary). I have been contributing to the development of the multibody dynamics software MUBODyn that simulates railway systems (vehicles and pantographs) in real operation conditions, aiming at enhancing existing designs and fostering innovation. Contact mechanics is my main expertise where I have been developing robust wheel-rail contact models to represent vehicle-track interaction forces and to predict wear and rolling contact fatigue.

My research is devoted to Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering. I work mostly with soft tissues, such as collagen hydrogels or the intervertebral discs of the spine, but I am also interested in tissue engineered scaffolds for bone regeneration. I investigate these problems from the computational perspective, preferentially applying Finite Element modelling, image reconstruction and rapid prototyping.
